celine has been setting the bar for sometime now. The foulard / paisley comeback + pajama dressing stems from a few memorable celine pieces that we all know and love.

weather its the full monte floral suity get up or just the black grounded floral moto jacket, these are some serious editorial favorites. I generally get extremely irritated when bogged down with spread after spread of the same stuff (we all remember the pages and pages of LV s&m kink of doily peter pan colors over molded sweater and leather waist-sinching belts, the oddles and oodles of givenchy pit bull and cougar printed jackets and skirts...you know; angry pastey model stands in junk yard amidst tv's she has just torched, flames to go with her unnaturally orange dye job. you know the one).

BUT, I think when magazines decide to dismiss the idea of attempting originality and stick to shooting the big items of the season its a really good chance to weed out the bad stylists from the good. In this post i've selected a bit of both just so we can get a feel for the contrast.

Can't get enough of these images. They make me want to quit my job, sell my bed and buy a few more cameras. They also make me want to do an entire series of the back of people's heads.

Dion Agius, surfer by trade who happens to have some cameras laying around, as he puts it. Damn. is how i put it. I can't describe the resentment i have towards photographers who's parents put them through school and gave them all the money they needed to buy the best gear.

I can't describe how much respect i have for someone who figures it out on their own.

Apparently I'm a little late on the game with this dude, as its seems the coolest cool kids where talking about him this time last year.

King Krule (formerly Zoo Kid) is the coolest of cool. awkwardly lovable, brash, with a hazy sound thats keeping me pressing repeat like i haven't since The Smiths entered my young life. His deceptively simple and raw music has a knowing sensibility that when coupled with his baby face makes for a winning combination.

Check the tunes here but first watch this stunning video for "Out Getting Ribs" (the kids got good taste, yeah, in food and art).

I suppose i just grew out of it and into an appreciation for pared-down trueism. But, i really dig these funky photos shot by Charlie Engman for 01 magazine.

Finally got to check out mr. Charlie Schuck's (you may recall charlie from previous posts) new Belltown digs today while roaming around early morning style. Must say, totally in love with the space. Charlie knows how to pick em ("em" being spaces, objects, collaborators...he seems to pick most things well).

These (above photos) are just a few pieces out of ton that will make your eyes wide. Its like a toy shop for adults with refined taste and deep pockets (those 2 generally go hand in hand, except in my case which is to say that i only have the taste part). There are however, a handful of one-of-kinds and simply breath taking art/design objects that are in the working girls price range.

I actually should have called this post "I like girly boy stuff", because as you can see if i were a boy I'd do it up botanical style. Which in its self is interesting since as a girl i have but 1 floral top in my wardrobe, such has been the case for some years now.

Theres just something about florals and the y chromosome that make a sweet pair.

Once upon a time long long ago, i stumbled onto a webpage called Six Pack France. i was intrigued by the name, imagery, hints of infrastructure, but alas, disappointment and frustration shown upon my furrowed brow when i discovered this site was not yet fully functioning. boo.

BUT! just yesterday I was browsing a blog i frequent ; The World's Best Ever for my Sound Advice fix, and...behold...a sound advice playlist created by SIX PACK FRANCE! i listen i love, i travel to their place in space of the interweb and...behold again! oodles and oodles of witty, humorous, unsurpassable content! clothing, screen prints, words, sounds, images, events, and one most important thing : a vision:

Post-Holiday Haze

after a whirlwind of a holiday season, the dust appears to possibly-potentially, some-time in the near future, to be settling just for a bit. hopefully. Anyway, amidst the merriment and magic I was turned onto a few things worth mentioning to my friends here in the blogosphere.

Numero uno, art gallery and specialty shop Nationale in Portland. I had the chance to spend a little quality time there while helping my friend Park install a mini set-up for her bags in May May's wonderland (may may being the founding mastermind). My only regret was that i was so enthralled with the Nationale regulars and neighboring visionaries that i wasn't able to comb through May's collection of art, music, literature, jewelry, fragrances, and nic-nacs with the attention to detail that they deserved. This will not be the case for long, as i am planing a trip back to portland as we speak. (or i guess as i type). Visit Nationale.... in person or on the interweb. it will not disappoint.

My other winter-month staple has been the Bodkin blog. The content, quality, and starpower of this resource is off the charts. having spent much time dreaming of sustainable living/ eating/ working in a collaborative space geared toward creation and innovation, I've been seeking out other working creative professionals who can yield some insight. Eviana Heartman, sustainable designer and found of Bodkin, has been my beacon of hope. check out here posts. here.

"Sustainability and fashion are often thought to be at odds with one another. Yet clothing is one thing that every human has in common. It's a massive global industry that provides many U.S. jobs, yet its infrastructure and materials systems have much room for improvement. At Bodkin, we begin each collection by sourcing materials as mindfully as possible. This can mean certified organic fibers—virtually all of our cotton is organic. We employ innovative new fibers such as Tencel (a closed-loop textile from renewable eucalyptus pulp) and post-consumer recycled fibers. However, some materials, such as wool and cashmere, are difficult to find with organic certification, but are inherently more sustainable than agriculturally grown, water-intensive fibers. Other material suppliers focus on fair and owner-operated labor throughout the supply chain, and to Bodkin this qualifies as a better way of doing things. A mill may work with polyester but have instituted systems to dramatically reduce their carbon footprint. Dyeing is a lesser-known area in which the fashion industry is responsible for environmental degradation; we actively seek out and promote materials that use vegetable-based or zero-effluent dye processes. Each textile Bodkin uses is in some way produced more thoughtfully than today's norm."

My newest favorite collaborator Jessica Park just launched her gorgeous new Aztec Parcel. I am one of many waiting in line to nab mine and wear it everywhere including to bed.

A native of Detroit, now a Seattle-based designer, 27 year old Jessica Park made her first bag last January out of sheer captivation by an “as-chance-would-have-it” material possessing quality appeal, history, and the look of something conventional dying to be transformed in a truly unconventional way (Park’s longstanding mantra). Just three months later Ampersand As Apostrophe, a high-end line of bags that double as clutches (and triple as anything else you may feel like) made from 100-year-old mail carrying duffels, was launched. Now A dash three, as the brand is also known, boasts an impressive gathering of fans and supporters.

As Business major turned Interiors major turned multi-faceted artist, It was instinctual for Park to employ a feeling of paradoxical form and function. Although the wow factor of these bags comes from their multiplicity and easiness, It can also be widely attributed to the duality of Park’s aesthetic alone. Part rustic, part design-conscious glossy chic takes you to both ends of the spectrum and back again. Coupled with her uber-aproachable nature and timely sense of humor, her space-casey savantiness is most definitely the last piece in the A3 puzzle. An upside-down view of the world makes for some interesting discoveries indeed. While shooting look book images for The Aztec Parcel, it seemed like good sense to Park to let her audience know what kind of designer was behind her newest brainchild, so she unflinchingly held a hand written sign that said "The only time I tried to give blood, I woke up surrounded by juice and cookies with a sticker that said I TRYED".

Ampersand As Apostrophe bares the mark of highly unique almost self-referential, extension of Park’s take on fashion & design. Having recalled an innate fascination with “identity’s multiple expressions” Her exploration of reinvention is the driving force behind her creations. Ampersand As Apostrophe is the embodiment of all things involving discovery, innovation and relevance. (plus a few fun facts involving cookies).

on the rare occasion that my earth-toned, minimal, less-is-more self becomes one with the world of gaudy I like to roll with it. There may be a number of things influencing this sudden fancy for all things loud and proud. the least mysterious of them may be that halloween is 2 days away and its crunch time for costume construction. On a similar note i seem to be sending out lego-like signals into the universe having spent so much time on my little brother's lego pharos get up (check out band of outsiders lego inspired blog PLAYWELL). Could be that I've taken such a liking to a certain fierce, attention getting, just-launched Aztec Parcel that I've been up close and personal with over the past week (will include a special explanation post in the near future).

Mostly I think all of this eclecticly colourful jazz was topped off by West and Beecroft's brainchild - Runaway. not so subtle symbolism and ego aside, its really terribly hard to deny the mesmerizing, awe inspiring wow factor that comes after watching the 35 minuet feature piece. The hyper-realistic visual style of the film plus its randomly dreamy almost "what the F" imagery and dialog makes for a damn good conversation starter. Musically brilliant, and worlds above what most mainstream celebrity "artists" are daring to do these days. I still have my qualms with a few particular scenes, but with that said i'll go to sleep tonight asking the elephant in my head to please not forget those breathtaking moments when Kanye's ballerina's danced their skinny little hearts out to the "Douchebag" song. epic.

all about it : hedi's latest stroke of brilliance : a short film

"The latest project from iconic designer & photographer Hedi Slimane takes us to the idyllic California coastline through the spirit of two young waifs, in the new film ”I LOVE USA”, featured on TheCorner.com. The short black & white piece is Slimane’s idealistic vision of the United States. The premise is simple: Sidney and Wolf are two teenagers who meet for the first time in Venice beach. The pair were scouted by Slimane at the Coachella rock festival in 2009 and 2010 respectively, and met for the first time on set.

The title comes from the nickname Slimane gave to Sidney “USA”, who has appeared in many of his diary’s photographs, after he decided that she was the iconic embodiment of the California girl and the aesthetic representation of all-American beauty.

Sidney improvises a chaotic cheerleader (far from the sweet imagery of cheerleading in American culture) and Wolf is an indie teen transposed in an new representation of “Peter and the Wolf‟. He accompanies Sidney on his out of tune cello, wearing a wolf mask. Behind the pair, Slimane’s signature American flag is visible, a recurring metaphor in many of his works.

This exclusive video is an improvisational exercise that highlights the naїvety & innocence of Sidney and Wolf, featuring themes that have made the designer famous throughout the world. The representation of a generation, the diaphanous beauty of Sidney and the very slim silhouette of Wolf project an intimate emotional atmosphere."

i must admit that as of late i seem to be suffering from a kind of mental paralysis. unlike many, i have no guide, guru, manifesto, or plan i can refer to in times like these. we've all heard more rules of thumb and pearls of wisdom than we can handle, but they are helpful and generally rooted in truth. So I've combed a certain source up and down, made a list and checked it twice. Here is the most relevant bits of information that I've chosen to bare in mind.

Do Not :

Constantly compare yourself to other artists.

Base the success of your entire career on one project.

Stick with what you know.

Undervalue your expertise.

Let money dictate what you do.

Only do work that your family/friends would love.

Set unachievable/overwhelming goals. To be accomplished by tomorrow.

A ceramics teacher, at the beginning of the semester, split the class in two. One half was told they would be graded on the quantity of work: the more a student produced, the higher the grade. The second group would be graded on quality: to get an A, a student only needed to produce one pot, but it had to be perfect.

It turned out that at the end of the semester, the works of highest quality were all produced by the students in the 'quantity' group. That group was constantly learning and improving, while the other group 'sat theorizing about perfection' and did not progress in their actual work.

Doing the Bi-monthly hard drive clean up and I came across a bit I wrote during a corporate rebrand stint. Its been nearly 2 years since that job and i am happy to say that i havent caved yet. please read, giggle, and enjoy it all the more knowing that its Thursday which in my definition is also Saturday, Tuesday, or any other glorious day, and i sit here unbound, no boss over my shoulder, no time card, no remorse.

Nov -28th 2008

"There are some days when i feel like if my head would explode it would feel so good, such a relief. Like how it feels after the dentist pulls that rotten tooth from your aching gums. I just cant look at anything, cant take in anymore visual stimulus. My cup is full. I cant focus, My eyes have reached there maximum ability to perform. Everytime i open a new window it makes my stomach turn like walking into a manila colored doctor's office, all eerie and sterile. All of the interfaces feel the same. blocky, contained, arial, vanilla. I start to loose track of reality. When nothing is appealing inside this 3 demential box i start to feel like nothing in life is appealing. from 9 to 5 this is life. This generation of pixels fabricates a reality that consumes you and your cube. Ironic how that cigarette break saves you, how somewhere between the 7th and the 3rd floor you start to come down, but in the end you may wind up with a hole in your throat, and wheres the relief in that?
There's nothing like the swift change of focus from the screen to the actual space you exist in, or on the rare occasion you get up with out looking first, and your complete lack of depth perception causes you to run into stationary objects. like say, a filling cabinet. That big red first aid kit thats shaped like a swiss cross next to the hot water is false advertisement. It can't save me. Every once in a while i meander over to it and poke around inside, like when you get up in the middle of the night and wander to the fridge that you know is empty, hoping that some how it magically filled itself up while you were sleeping. Its a nice computer in a nice office in a nice part of town with a nice salary. but sometimes....i just wish my head would explode.
When i was younger i always told myself that when I grew up i would never sit behind a desk all day. I have blatantly contradicted the ambitions of my young spirit. I'm in a bad sitcom...minus all the comical elements.
I have completely lost my ability to spell words. to form complete sentences. To control my facial muscles in a normal and polite manner. Even my spell check requires 3 trys to figure out what I'm trying to say. Its like i let some water seep into my openings and its caused a short circuit and hit me where it counts...the motherboard. All affiliated operations have gone haywire. and guess what. I forgot to turn on the backup drive.
